The above photo shows Millwall Ironworks and Shipbuilding Company, about 1858, where Isambard Kingdom Brunel built and launched his biggest ship ever, the SS 'Great Eastern', It shows workmen preparing for a possible launch with a figure resembling Brunel seen standing in the background, the strain of this launch exhausted Brunel, he became seriously ill and sadly died in 1859 aged just 53. |
